Chris Chope has been campaigning for the equalisation of civil partnerships ever since the law was changed to allow same sex marriage.  That change created an unfairness in preventing equal access by heterosexuals to civil partnerships.

Chris Chope said “today’s judgment shows that Maria Miller was completely wrong to dismiss the concerns which I expressed in 2013 about the lack of equalisation being contrary to human rights law”.

Maria Miller, the then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Minister for Women and Equalities, had assured Chris Chope on 21st May 2013 (Hansard column 1154) that “the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights will not be compromised by the fact that the legislation makes unequal provision for civil partnerships”.
